Starting a new chapter after retirement

Ghispoti Roy, who has been a BRAC staff member from 1972 to 2011, is pictured here speaking at BRAC’s 10 year anniversary celebration.

(BRAC staff from 1972-2011)

Young Ghispoti Roy was taking refuge in Meghalaya, India, during the war of independence between Bangladesh and Pakistan. When he returned to the newly-liberated Bangladesh, he joined a relief distribution team sent by a Fazle Hasan Abed from London, on a cold January morning of 1972. He never looked back.

For the next 39 years, Ghispoti Roy became an integral part of laying the groundwork for what BRAC is today. When he was ready to retire, he was given an offer to extend his tenure for five more years because of his irreplaceable contribution to the organisation. He accepted the offer, and pushed back his retirement till 2011.

Upon his retirement, Ghispoti received his provident fund, a retirement bonus and stock of unused leave. The bonus was but a small token of appreciation from the organisation to Ghispoti - a gratitude well-earned. No amount of money could thank him enough for his contribution to the organisation, and the work he did to rebuild his country after the war.

Ghispoti’s legacy lives on in BRAC, through his daughter Komolika Roy, a senior accounts officer in the organisation’s Accounts Department. Komolika, who grew up watching her father dedicate his career in changing people’s lives, followed his footsteps to become part of the BRAC family. Nothing makes her father more proud than to see his daughter being involved with BRAC as he has been all his life.

Ending a career is not an easy decision for anyone. Retirement benefits are available for any BRAC staff serving the organisation

for more than three years. The comprehensive policy rewards staff for their contribution, with rewards categorised depending on the number of years served and the types of separation the staff undergoes. The retirement benefit is designed to help employees to start a new chapter of their lives, as a token of appreciation for their hard work and to support them financially into the next stage of their life.
